Creator's Note- Essa was created originally in 2006 when I was trying to be an art student. She started as a random one-off illustration (and not a good one at that) of a woman in a terrible fishnet outfit with a crude staff for a weapon and the worse set of "vine" tattoos you could think of. But she had attitude and a awesome bob cut hair style, so I was cool with that. Afterwards over a few months I tried drawing her more, and that's when she began to evolve into her present day form that you see now. She underwent a full revision of her body type, tattoos, weapons, and who she was as a person.

Racial Background- Essa was born into slavery in her homeland of Tanana, a theocracy seated in the heart of a peninsula at the southernmost region of the mainland. Their culture was highly religious and relied predominantly on the oceans and inland trade route for survival.

The slave trade was deemed legal and slaves were pulled from the general population through selective acquisition. A member of the priesthood would visit a family to examine every child once born. Lying in the census or hiding a child were punishable by death. A priest would have a yearly quota to fill, and sometimes special requests. If a family lacked the money to bribe the priest away then they stood a very strong chance of losing their child if they already had children, if they were attractive or possessing obvious desirable trades (strength or beauty, but rarely intellect), or if they were too poor or weak to make trouble. Their religious doctrine deemed slavery as a form of divine worship. Religious propaganda spoke that "serving" (slavery) was merely a form of worship. It was all bullshit crafted by the clergy and nobility to acquire a constant supply of slaves without provoking a war with their mainland neighbors. It was a mostly successful system maintained with the threat of violence and (much like the old catholic) excommunication. If you didn't want to suffer a horrible death or be denied a pleasant afterlife, you meekly submitted and watched as your newborn was taken from you or from your neighbors arms.

The Tananans were actually immigrants to this continent. Refugees who set sail and discovered the peninsula and forged a new civilization there until they had populated the entire peninsula. Because of this, they are the only true dark skinned peoples on what is a mostly "Caucasian" continent. Tananans have bleached white or blonde hair by nature and are dark skinned. They also tend to be absurdly tall and are predisposed to strong metabolism and good physical fitness. To mainlanders the Tananans seem like a cruel and backwards race of warriors, and for that reason most mainlanders only interact with them for the sake of trade.

Origin Story- Essa was selected at birth to be a slave. She was born to very low born parents. Her father was a capable sailor and her mother worked in textiles. Both were very devout and reasonably attractive with two older children, Essa being the third. The visiting priest took Essa due to her being the third child and the high odds of a "successful" turnout. All claimed children like Essa are raised together in communes where they are taught whatever skills deemed fit for them. This isolation from the "outside" helps to brainwash future slaves by leading them to believe their "place" in life is perfectly normal. Deny them a normal life of freedom and they will not know to seek it out through rebellion. Adult slaves are often too entrenched into the religion and workings of the system from them to revolt from it.

By the age of twelve Essa was hardly literate. She could only read enough of her native language to understand basic signs and some simply worded messages. She could speak very well, as her "teachers" taught her proper speech so she would not offend a high born owner. As she aged it became apparent she was becoming more and more attractive and so her training continuously included more advanced forms of skills. She is well learned in the art of cooking and tailoring of clothing. She can mend nearly any garment and cook almost any dish she has a chance to examine. Cleaning is second nature, and maintaining courtly grace and "being present without being seen" is instinctive.

Upon reaching puberty it was decided that she would be a concubine. She inevitably loses her virginity to her "trainer". In the years leading up to this she, as is not uncommon, felt reservations and doubt about the rightness of what she was going through in the school. Most children feel this, mostly because of natural rebelliousness and curiosity, but very few actually act on it. After her deflowering, which was not pleasant or welcomed to her, she was afraid and made an effort to finally act on her ill feelings about the school. She escaped into the night, but was quickly discovered and fled into the lower districts of the town where she remained in hiding from numerous guards for days. The beginning of her life of freedom starts when she finally sets a calloused foot across the border of her homeland and the great unknown of the mainland in front of her.

Her teenage years up to present day were spent as a nomad, battling with racism, poverty, and homelessness. She was frequently mistreated due to her inability to speak the mainland language, and was further mistreated due to her obvious origins. She performed numerous odd jobs, including prostitution in order to keep herself clothed and fed. Present day she works as a wandering sell-sword who on occasion engages in prostitution.

Essa's personality is heavily influenced by her life's experiences. She is very slow to trust others and is frequently hostile towards people.

She is vain, arrogant, stubborn, impatient, and vulgar. It is not unlikely that she will approach you with the intent to intimidate you with either her physical appearance or her obvious combat ability. She enjoys fine foods and clothing, and adores jewelry. She wants to become wealthy and "retire" to a life of comfort. However, she is often poor due to her inability to manage her money. She frequents expensive Inns and purchase frivolous amounts of food and "comforts". She often resorts to prostitution to avoid sleeping in barns or worse. If she managed her money better, she'd make enough to be considered a wealthy mercenary. Her skill with the sword is unparalleled by even the most seasoned veteran and she has acquired a reputation as being a reliable, if a little frustrating and difficult, sell-sword.

Everything she wears she made herself using the skills she learned when she was a slave. Her homemade meals are notably delicious, but she is usually too lazy to do any of her own cooking.
